Arriving Somewhere

Arriving Somewhere is a photographic exploration of Cruit Island, a small island off the coast of County Donegal, Ireland, a place that formed a significant part of my childhood. Returning after many years away, I found a place that felt both familiar and unfamiliar. Coastal erosion, housing developments and the traces of human activity had quietly reshaped parts of the island, altering somewhere I had once known so well.

As I revisited these beaches, roads and open spaces, I realized I wasn't only witnessing how the island had changed. The more time I spent there, the more I found myself reflecting on my own relationship with it. What began as a return to a familiar place gradually became an exploration of time, memory and the way both places and the people connected to them continue to evolve.

Through my framing of the landscape, I wanted to create photographs that carry the quiet presence of those who have spent time here before. They recall family holidays, familiar routines and fleeting moments that have become woven into my own memories of the island, preserving not only the place itself, but the feeling of returning to it.

Rather than documenting change alone, Arriving Somewhere is an attempt to preserve a moment in the ongoing life of the island. The photographs acknowledge that while places inevitably transform, the emotional connections we form with them often remain, allowing the past and present to exist side by side.
